Showcase Sunday (39): The Small To Not So Small

Showcase Sunday is a weekly meme hosted by Vicki at Books, Biscuits, and Tea, where we showcase what books we've gotten over the course of the week, whether it be bought, received from the library, from the publishers for review, etc.

As you may have noticed from the title, this week's haul was going to be small. But then Blythe, Kate and myself decided to combine our haul which then turned out to be not so small.

For Review:

Bought:

Won:

Thanks Shelleyrae!

Solstice: (Received by Blythe) I'm looking forward to reading Solstice because the Greek Mythology coupled with a dystopian setting intrigues me, but the mixed reviews and love triangle intimidate me.  Thanks Tor Teen!

Fairytales for Wilde Girls: (Received by Melanie) This seems to be a light and cute read. And the cover just makes me go all crazy.

Stung: (Received by Melanie) The idea of the novel is ingenious, nothing like I've ever heard of. Yet when I read this recently, the world building and characterisation turned out to be greatly disappointing. And the unfortunate, romance. What is with romance these days? Bleh. Thanks Bloomsbury Australia!

Banish: (Received by Melanie) Banish, to be completely honest, sounds crazy. Alyssa's mom is psychotic and her ex-boyfriend committed suicide. WUT. But it's another Aussie contemporary so I'm hoping it'll turn out to be something worthwile. Thanks Harlequin Australia!

Unseen: (Received by Kate) I am VERY excited about this book. It's the seventh in a crime series set in the part of Georgia where I grew up. Book six was genuinely terrible, but the first five were absolutely amazing.

Parasite: (Received by Kate) (I THINK I got this this week?) Mira Grant/Seanan McGuire is another of my absolute favorite authors, so this was an exciting ARC to get.

False Sight: (Received by Kate) This is the sequel to a book I REALLY enjoyed. I know a lot of bloggers have a problem with the author because he once reacted negatively to a negative review of a book written by a friend of his, but he was SUPER embarrassed about it and I think he handled himself well afterwards.

Down London Road: (Received by Kate) This is a garbage, soapy romance novel. I'm very excited about reading something that isn't SUPPOSED to be very good.

Tarnish: (Received by Kate) I need to read the book that came before it, first. I like historical fiction, so we'll see.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane: (Received by Kate) He's one of my top five favorite authors of all time, so I'm pretty pumped about this.

Eleanor & Park: (Received by Kate) YA Romance, great author: obviously I'm psyched about this one.

Charm & Strange: (Received by Kate) I've heard great things about this from a lot of people (Blythe gave it, what five stars?), so I've been wanting to read it for a while.

Another Little Piece: (Received by Kate) This is another one I've been meaning to buy since I saw all the positive reviews on Goodreads.

Unnatural Creatures: (Received by Kate) I bought this for my little sister because it contains works by some of my favorite writers, but there are a few stories I haven't read in it, so I'm gonna check it out first.

Fury: (Received by Kate) This book is tough to get in the US. My friend Wendy let me borrow it so I don't have to pay a million dollars to get it shipped here.

The Reapers at the Angels: (Received by Kate) Also loaned to me by Wendy. I love creepy stuff, so this is high on my TBR list.

Proxy: (Received by Kate) My review of this went up on Thursday, but since I bought it on Wednesday, I guess it still counts.

Wildlife: (Received by Melanie) This is an Aussie contemporary which I'm uber excited for. I love books that deal with deep or difficult issues as it's always fascinating to see how the author tackles it. After seeing some convincing reviews, this one is on my high TBR. Thanks Shelleyrae!

What did you get this week? Let us know in the comments, or leave a link to your haul, and we'll check it out as soon as possible!

  1. Oh ahaha! I was expecting a tiny haul but that's A LOT of books- not to mention very awesome indeed.

Okay. Blythe, I am very intrigued by Solstice but the reviews so far have made me nervous. The idea of mythology and dystopia is really cool tough, hope you like it more!
Mel, I'm sad to hear that Stung was nothing special in your opinion. I recently got this from a friend in the U.S version so I am nervously waiting your review. Eek! Omigosh, Wildlife is so so brilliant. I'm sure you'll love it as well.
Kate, I haven't seen some of them before but the YA titles are some I've been anticipating. Charm & Strange looks gorgeous, I hope you enjoy it! Ooh, and Another Little Piece. I wasn't a fan like Mel but I see why most love the writing and all.

    Wonderful haul, ladies!

    1. I LOVE books like Another Little Piece where I respect people who love it and who hate it. It warms my heart.

  2. Great haul, guys! I am excited to hear what you think of Parasite, Kate. I love the cover and title- seriously crazy. Oh and Eleanor and Park is a cute read, the ending bummed me though. I saw Banish's cover the other day and it looks a bit odd for me, but I like how the pink brings out her blue eyes. Solstice seems pretty interesting, love triangles would make me nervous as well. Happy reading, y'all!

    1. I've finished reading Parasite. I'm trying not to say anything about it until Blythe reads it, because I have opinions tied to the fact that it's the tenth book I've read by this author, and B's never read any of her books, so I don't want to taint (heh) her experience.

I've heard mixed things about Eleanor and Park, and that makes me REALLY want to read it NOWNOWNOW.

    1. Stung was a huge laugh for me. I just didn't like it, unfortunately.

  5. I don't care how small the hauls you guys individually received were, because you got all the great books! Blythe, looking forward to your review for Solstice. I haven't been seeing many reviews of that one, so I hope you enjoy it. :) Stung was a disappointment for me as well, which is a shame because like you said, it had a very original idea. Good potential put to waste, eh. Yay for Neil Gaiman and Kate Quinn!

Fab haul, ladies, and enjoy all your new books!

    1. I think I'm the only person crossing my fingers that Blythe will be horribly offended by something in Solstice. I just love the indignation.

    2. I dunno why but I am as well, Kate. There's just something funny about it...

  6. I'll be interested to see what you make of "The Ocean at the End of the Lane." Neil Gaiman is one of my favourite authors, but I had strongly mixed feelings about this particular book.

And I really want "Another Little Piece." Having some trouble tracking down a copy in the UK (that I can afford before payday!)

    1. I've been anxiously anticipating The Ocean at the End of the Lane for MONTHS now, so I'm avoiding reading it for a little while until my anticipation dies down, you know? I don't like heading into books expecting them to be amazing.

Buying books that haven't been published yet in your country is an absolute nightmare (the amount of money I've spent on shipping alone is really embarrassing).

  7. Solstice sounds so good! I've wanted to read it ever since I saw it on Goodreads. I hope you enjoy everything!

  8. Ahaha, so many amazing books! I don't even know where to start.

Blythe- I'm loving how Solstice has Greek Mythology AND is a dystopian- those are basically my two favorite genres. Also, I'm fairly sure that the author is a Texan author, which is pretty cool and all. ;) I'll be looking for your review to see if it's worth a read or not, though.

Melanie- Stung DOES sound totally unique, it's something realistic, yet I haven't seen it done in books before. I'm sorry it was such a disappointment though. :/ I'd get Banish simply because it's an Aussie book, I swear, they're putting something in the water down there, but Aussie books are just phenomenal. *eyes Australia suspiciously* Same goes for Wildlife!

Kate- I'm in the middle of Eleanor & Park right now, and it's so cute yet so heavy. I'm really excited to see how it ends! I've heard AWESOME things about Charm and Strange, and Another Little Piece, the reviews have been great for those two so far. I mean, if Blythe gives a book 5 stars, you know it has to be good... ;)

Awesome mega-haul you three! I hope you enjoy all your lovelies. <3

  9. This is one heck of a haul ladies! I remember reading Fury early last year, and honestly it is such a great book! I have read some great reviews for Charm & Strange and Another Little Piece, that I can't believe I didn't request copies of them. I will certainly have to get finished copies. You have a wonderful stack of books to get through, I hope you enjoy them all!

    1. Well, the good thing about buying them--if you purchase the hardback rather than a digital version--is that they are beautifully bound. I keep petting them both.

I wanted to read Fury, but it costs like a billion dollars to get it here.

  10. Whoa, that's one hell of a book haul girls! I'm a little jealous of the Neil Gaiman titles! He's one of my very favorites. Neverwhere is so good! Have fun digging into all of your awesome reads!

    1. Neverwhere is amazing, but I've never actually read it because Gaiman read the audiobook and he did it so beautifully I can't bear to consume it any other way.

  11. Great haul, you guys. I am hearing some pretty awful things about Solstice and Stung, but I cannot wait to hear what Kate thinks of Fury. I really want to read that one and I know how hard it is to get here in the US!

    1. I'm weirdly excited to read these ladies' negative reviews of Solstice and Stung, so I hope Blythe hates Solstice.

I will be reading Fury very, very soon. I could not justify the expense of purchasing it (seriously, have you looked into the price? Insane.). I feel like I got away with something sneaky by borrowing it.

  12. You girls got some really great books!! I wasn't able to get into Stung, but I hope you enjoy it! I so want to read Parasite!! I got declined for it. :( I almost took on The Ocean at the End of the Lane for audiobook review, but I don't really have time for it, so I passed. I'm still reading Another Little Piece. I like it, but for some reason I haven't picked it up in a few days. I hope all of you enjoy your new books!!
