Now that Nikki has rescued Jack, all she wants is to be with him and graduate high school. But Cole tricked Nikki into feeding off him, and she’s begun the process of turning into an Everliving herself... which means she must feed on a Forfeit soon — or die.

Terrified for her survival, Nikki and Jack begin a desperate attempt to reverse the process using any means possible. Even Cole, who they expected to fight them at every turn, has become an unlikely ally — but how long can it last? Nikki needs to feed on Cole to survive, Cole needs Nikki to gain the throne in the Everneath, Jack needs Nikki because she is everything to him — and together, they must travel back to the Underworld to undo Nikki’s fate and make her mortal once more. But Cole isn’t the only one with plans for Nikki: the Queen has not forgotten Nikki’s treachery, and she wants her destroyed for good. Will Nikki be forced to spend eternity in the Underworld, or does she have what it takes to bring down the Everneath once and for all?

In this stunning conclusion to the Everneath trilogy, Brodi Ashton evokes the resiliency of the human spirit and the indomitable power of true love.

This review may hint towards what happens in Everbound, so keep that in mind. However, it is spoiler-free for Evertrue.

Evertrue doesn't feel like the end; while final installments in trilogies tend to be the darkest of the three, I found Evertrue's tone to be far different than the two novels preceding it. Obviously, the stakes in Evertrue are high, arguably at the series' highest, and lives are at risk. So yes, the underlying plot of Evertrue is dark, harrowing, and emotional, but it's how the characters react in these times that makes me love this installment and connect to it more than I did the first two; among many other reasons.

For starters, in Evertrue I finally got a feel for both Nikki and Jack individually. For the first two books, while I found their love for each other and dedication towards one another admirable, I never got to connect to anything but their relationship because that was all they seemed to think about. Here, we get a taste of both Nikki and Jack's characters separately (and, of course, together as well), and because of this I was able to connect to them both a lot more.

They're both incredibly witty and likable characters, and I appreciate how Brodi Ashton waited until now for the true, pleasant aspects of their personalities to surface. It only further proved that, in each other's presence, they can only truly be themselves; and I feel that if this character development were in any of the other two novels, it would have felt slightly out of place, if not entirely. And then there's the Jack swoons, obviously.
"You are my peace and home. You are the everything. The pain isn't real. The hearts are."
And then there's Cole, whom I will love forever, despite how much of an asshole he can be most of the time at times. I don't want to say anything about Cole and his involvement throughout Evertrue right here, but all I can say is that if you didn't get a feel for how truly deep his feelings for Nikki go, and vice versa, I think you will in this one. Jack and Nikki are sweet and made an adorable couple; but I believe, and will continue to believe, that the best relationship in this trilogy is the one between Cole and Nikki.

It's not just that Cole is such an incredibly complex character, whose motives you can never, and will never be quite sure of; it's that his relationship with Nikki is the exact same way. Their relationship is the most dynamic, engaging, and emotional one in the trilogy for me; and in the end, it's the most beautiful thing about the novel.

The actual plot of Evertrue may not be very action packed (although it is extremely engaging), and the climax may be a bit quick and anticlimactic (lasting about five pages), but I don't think the quality of this trilogy is or should be measured by the amount of action it contains (unless it's clear the focus is supposed to be action and not much else); the quality of this trilogy, at least for me, is measured by the amount of emotional attachment I have to the characters, even the ones I either knew I shouldn't, or the ones I took a while to truly care about. It's measured by the moments spent cheering for the characters' fights; the moments spent feeling your heart break or feel fuzzy within the span of just a few pages; and ultimately, the moments you spend sharing the same sorrow as the characters as you find yourself crying in the dark of your room at midnight.

And I think that's what all great trilogies or series should be measured by in the end, really. Not just the technical aspects, but the emotional. Evertrue broke my heart, yet at the same time managed to make it feel warm. I laughed at the many hysterical comments made, and teared up at the more emotional. I feel as if I have just finished this great journey as the characters themselves have done so, and I do acknowledge that this trilogy and this installment may have its faults in regards to the pacing; but in the end, my feelings for this trilogy as a whole and its conclusion seem to be as complex as the characters and their relationships with one another. But I do know a few things for sure: I love this book, I love these characters, and I love this trilogy.

(And I also know that I cried a lot, that the last two chapters are absolute perfection, and that I read each of those two chapters, like, ten times since last night. I have many feels.)

  1. This is one of my favorite series. I can't wait to read Evertrue. I love all of the characters in the series but I feel more drawn to Cole (I guess I always have a weak spot for the good looking bad boy lol). I hate that this is the last one in the trilogy cause this series is a really good read.

  3. I've obviously always loved Jack and Nikki together but Cole is my favourite. I had such a roller coaster of a relationship with him in Everbound. I can't even hate him properly cause he is such a well-developed character. Just, kudos to Ashton. Awesome review and thanks for the giveaway!

    1. Mine too! Jack and Nikki are cute, though...but COLE. And yes, I went from loving him to hating him in Everbound, but come on, I can never NOT love Cole. He's such an amazing and complex character.

  4. I think the thing that really makes me love this series is the strength of its characters. I'm excited to see more of Nikki and Jack - and Cole, obviously! I can't believe it's coming to an end, but I'm trusting in Ms. Ashton that it will be a good one - she hasn't disappointed yet. P.S. Thanks for the giveaway!!

    1. Definitely!! That's why I love this last installment so much. It has some issues with plotting and pacing, but I care so much for the characters that those issues weren't too huge in the long run for me.

  10. I literally just read both Everneath and Everbound last week. Everneath wasn't my favorite, but Everbound surprised me and now I'm excited to see how Ashton concludes everything in Evertrue!
I agree that Cole and Nikki's relationship is more dynamic and interesting. And I do like Cole's character the best. He's enigmatic, and yet at the same time also stays pretty true to his characterization. I cannot imagine what would compel Cole to help Nikki find a way to avoid becoming an Everliving, but I guess I'll have to find out.
Your review has definitely made me more excited for Evertrue's release. And I need to see what happens in the final two chapters. Ashton certainly knows how to conclude her books.

    1. I definitely agree with you on that. Everneath was just okay for me (I gave it either 2 or 2.5 stars), but Everbound was amazing for me. And YES, so much more dynamic and interesting. But I did find Nikki and Jack's relationship to be more engaging in this installment. Even though Jack is a bit annoying and overprotective at times (which is obviously understood, considering what they've been through just to have each other). And you'll find out. ;)

  11. I really need to start this series! I love mythology (I was one of few kids in my HS English class who actually enjoyed that portion of the course) and these books have always sounded great :)

  14. Your review has me so excited for this one! I love Cole, too. I never can tell exactly what he's up to or thinking and that makes him so interesting to me. I'm glad you were happy with how the series wrapped up.

  15. Hmmm, I agree with you on the tone being the lightest, which is totally weird. Also, even though it's the highest stakes, I didn't feel like the way she handled it made it seem that dark or dangerous. If that makes sense.

The difference between you and me is that I never got a sense of Nikki and Jack. In fact, I think I knew them best in the first book, and we've been doing a downhill slide together to this point. Or maybe I've been sliding away and they're jeering at me from atop the hill. But something.

Wow, I definitely missed their wit. Jack, especially, was always really boring to me.

*barfs a little at that quote* Jack is such a HULKING CHEESEBALL. No. I don't like when the romance is so squishy. Be mean at each other a bit. God.

Like Cole. You can see my reasons. Only he isn't Cole in this book and GRAR.
