And with the worsening Aether storms threatening the tribe's precarious existence, Aria begins to fear that leaving Perry behind might be the only way to save them both.

In this second book in her spellbinding Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi combines fantasy and dystopian elements to create a captivating love story as perilous as it is unforgettable.

This review contain spoilers for Under the Never Sky.

Recently - and far too often, if you ask me - in young adult trilogies, second installments have been widely known to be practically a resting point for both the author, and the characters and the plot. Instead of what should be an intense ride setting up for the final installment, the second installment in a trilogy is, more often than not, a complete and utter bore ending with a bang to lure readers who were less than impressed with the second installment to come back and read the third.

Clearly, Veronica Rossi did not receive the memo that apparently this is how second installments are treated nowadays, which is evident by the sheer awesomeness that is Through the Ever Night. Through the Ever Night takes place few months after the ending of Under the Never Sky; Perry is now the Blood Lord of the Tides, and is reunited with Aria after being departed for months. While Perry is dealing with his newfound duties and stresses that come with being the Blood Lord, Aria is still determined to find Perry's nephew, Talon, and bring him back to the Tides, all while having to worry about the monstrous Aether storms taunting her, Perry, and everyone else, above.

Through the Ever Night was everything that Under the Never Sky was times two - it was fast-paced, thrilling, full of action, full of character and relationship development, full of heartbreak, and full of Aether (lots and lots of Aether!). Every single thing that made Under the Never Sky amazing was in Through the Ever Sky, and somehow, Rossi managed to make those aspects even more amazing, adding more and more depth to them.

I just recently finished Under the Never Sky and really, really liked it, so now I'm pretty much dying to read Through the Ever Night. And come on, look at how pretty that cover looks with my blog's colors! My blog and this book are meant to be together. It's fate, people. And everyone knows you don't mess with fate. So I think it's only fair I get an ARC of this immediately, right? I mean, you don't want to piss off fate, do you?

Anna Dressed in Blood
Kendare Blake

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn't expect anything outside of the ordinary: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

Enter the dark, magical world of the House of Night, a world very much like our own, except here vampyres have always existed.

One minute, sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird is a normal teenager dealing with everyday high school stress: her cute boyfriend Heath, the school’s star quarterback who suddenly seems more interested in partying than playing ball; her nosy frenemy Kayla, who’s way too concerned with how things are going with Heath; her uber-tough geometry test tomorrow. The next, she’s Marked as a fledgling vampyre, forcing her to leave her ordinary life behind and join the House of Night, a boarding school where she will train to become an adult vampyre. That is, if she makes it through the Change—and not all of those who are Marked do. It sucks to begin a new life, especially away from her friends, and on top of that, Zoey is no average fledgling. She has been chosen as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. Zoey discovers she has amazing powers, but along with her powers come bloodlust and an unfortunate ability to Imprint with Heath, who just doesn’t know how to take “no” for an answer. To add to her stress, she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers: when she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite group, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny—with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.

For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.

Showcase Sunday is a weekly meme hosted by Vicki at Books, Biscuits, and Tea, where we showcase what books we've gotten over the course of the week, whether it be from a book store, bought for your eReader, received from the library, or from the publishers for review.

For Review:

*flails* *searches house for paper bag* *screams at husband because she can't find paper bag* *finds paper bag* *breathes in and out in paper bag* *chokes on paper bag* This is officially the best haul I've ever gotten in the history of ever and will most likely be the best haul I will ever get - because, just LOOK AT ALL THE PRETTIES. *dies* (I died (and swore) a lot the day I was approved for these. Just ask my entire Twitter feed and Ashleigh Paige at The YA Kitten, because she had to revive me, like, three times.) I already read Through the Ever Night and it was freaking amazing, and I am currently reading Revolution 19, which is okay so far, but really nowhere near as awesome as I expected a novel about the robot apocalypse to be. Next up is The Madman's Daughter, and I absolutely can't wait!

What did you get this week?

Ratings/Reviews I Would Change

Have you ever went through your old reviews and thought, "Man, I was way too harsh on that book," or "Man, I went way too easy on that book," and you wish you could go back and just rewrite your review or leave a note at the end saying that your entire review should be taken with a grain of salt, or that it's just not a "you" book, but you're just too damn lazy to do so?

If you have thought that, then I know how you feel. And if you haven't LIAR! prepare yourself, for the thoughts will come. And they will consume your thoughts. (Whoa! Blythe's being overly dramatic! Everyone, get your cameras!)

I've had my fair share of ratings or reviews that I want desperately to change, but then again I really don't want to do that, either, and not just because I'm lazy. The problem with me, and how I write my reviews, is that right when I finish a book, I hop on the computer to write my review. And if I'm reading a book at night and I'm nearing the end, but I'm too tired to write a coherent review, then I will save the last chapter to be read in the morning so I can write my review. I find my way of reviewing to be both a blessing and a curse. I find it to be a blessing in that it is more convenient for me, and for my readers, and I'll never have to worry about catching up on reviews because I'll always have them done. (Though of course, there are some books that I just can't bring myself to write reviews for, most recently Lucid, which left me so incoherent I couldn't put you through the torture of reading a review form me. See! I care.) However, I also find it to be a curse in that when I immediately write a review upon finishing a book, all of my feelings are way too fresh. This may not be so much of a negative thing to some people, and it isn't always for me, but then there are those books that leave me angry upon finishing, that I just fill my review with expletives and a complete and total bias against the book, and then I publish it. But then I feel guilty for it, reading my review and just thinking, "I was way too harsh. People might read this review and cancel the book out because of it. People who might actually like this book." And that is what inspired me to write this post, but of course I wouldn't have even thought of writing this if it weren't for the wonderful Christina at A Reader of Fictions (she's my go-to girl for gifs. We have arguments entirely in gifs. Because that's how adults argue, in case you haven't gotten the memo.) So, below you will find a couple reviews that I personally would change. Some may surprise you. Or not. I don't know what surprises you.

Julie Cross's Vortex is the thrilling second installment of the Tempest series, in which the world hangs in the balance as a lovelorn Jackson must choose who to save.

Jackson Meyer has thrown himself into his role as an agent for Tempest, the shadowy division of the CIA that handles all time-travel-related threats. Despite his heartbreak at losing the love of his life, Jackson has proved himself to be an excellent agent. However, after an accidental run in with Holly—the girl he altered history to save—Jackson is once again reminded of what he's lost. And when Eyewall, an opposing division of the CIA, emerges, Jackson and his fellow agents not only find themselves under attack, but Jackson begins to discover that the world around him has changed and someone knows about his erased relationship with Holly, putting both their lives at risk all over again.

This review does not contain any spoilers for Tempest

Based on the 2013 sequels I've read so far (really only Through the Ever Night and Vortex), 2013 seems to be the year of sequels that outshine their predecessors in practically every way imaginable. Vortex, the second installment in Julie Cross' Tempest trilogy, took all my preconceived expectations and expanded upon them, exceeding each and every one of my expectations by tenfold.

Where Tempest moved at a somewhat slow pace, letting the mystery and suspense build up throughout the novel, Vortex moved at a pace on a completely opposite spectrum than Tempest. One of the problems I had with Tempest was that I found it to be a bit slow moving - understandably so, however, considering Cross created her own concept of time travel and had to explain it, of course - but slow pace is definitely not a concern with Vortex. The action in Vortex begins right as you open the first page, and - cliche alert - doesn't stop until the final, excruciatingly evil pages.

HOLY CRAP. I can't believe it's just two days away from 2013. My wallet is going to die in 2013 - particularly January, where apparently I felt the need to take up a 'no-book-left-behind' policy, and pre-ordered eight books, with more most likely to come. 2012 was such an awesome year, and I'm so happy that I decided to create my blog because I've met the most amazing people and have read the most amazing books I probably would not have read if I hadn't started blogging. And this giveaway is dedicated to those amazing books - my ten favorite books that I've read since creating my blog in April. While going through the absolutely amazing books I've read this year, I've managed to narrow down all the awesomeness into a list of ten books, of which one lucky reader can choose five. (Note: some of my favorites are not yet published, so I will either send the winner a physical ARC if I have one available - if I have a physical ARC available to send I will put an asterisk next to the book's title - or I will pre-order them a copy of the book from The Book Depository, and they will get it when it is released. Also, if one or more of the books you choose are a sequel to a book you have not yet read, just tell me and I will get you the first book in replacement of the sequel, or along with the sequel.) Now, onto the giveaway! Like I had mentioned earlier, I had quite a difficult time narrowing down my favorite reads of 2012 into a list of ten, but, dear blog readers, I present to you... my ten favorite reads of 2012 (in no particular order):

There’s an island off the coast of Maine that’s not on any modern map.

Shrouded in mist and protected by a deadly reef, Trespass Island is home to a community of people who guard the island and its secrets from outsiders. Seventeen-year-old Delia grew up in Kansas, but has come here in search of her family and answers to her questions: Why didn’t her mother ever talk about Trespass Island? Why did she fear the open water? But Delia’s not welcome and soon finds herself enmeshed in a frightening and supernatural world where ancient Greek symbols adorn the buildings and secret ceremonies take place on the beach at night.

Sean Gunn, a handsome young lobsterman, befriends Delia and seems willing to risk his life to protect her. But it’s Jax, the coldly elusive young man she meets at the water’s edge, who finally makes Delia understand the real dangers of life on the island. Delia is going to have to fight to survive. Because there are monsters here. And no one ever leaves Trespass alive.
Two large, scaly animals gripped the bottom of the Widowsong, their shapes like the dark silhouettes of a nightmare. Webbed hands. Claws. Spiked tails. One of the monsters swung and fixed me with reptilian yellow eyes. Its jaws unhinged like a bear trap, showing rows of curved, sharp teeth, and it screamed at me. The obscene roar reverberated through the water and suddenly the creature swam toward me, with rapid undulating movements and a bobbing motion of its head.

I'm terrified of fish. Not so much that I'd break into a hysterical fit of screams upon the sight of a goldfish (but if it touches me, that's a completely different story), or so terrified that I'd ban Finding Nemo from my household (it's not banned, it's just not welcome...), but I am terrified of fish enough for Revel to make a remarkably lasting impression in my nightmares on me, thanks to the passage above and many, many more throughout the novel.

Don't let that pretty dress cover fool you - Revel is a thoroughly haunting and creepy read, with rich and incredibly descriptive detail of sea monsters (or, as I'll be referring them for the remainder of this review, 'evil fish', because it fits the monsters better than 'sea monsters' and I don't want to spoil what they really are) throughout the entire novel. Along with the horrifying descriptions and equally as horrifying happenings, however, Guibord managed to incorporate a good amount of humor interwoven with the horror, garnering quite a few laughs from me, which, I'm sure you could imagine, was a refreshing break from the expressions of shock plastered on my face for the remainder of the novel.

All right.  You asked us a lot of (really, really good) questions, and we answered.  Twice.  See, we had the post completely finished and ready to go up a week ago, but then all the text disappeared.  We all secretly suspect that this is somehow my (Kate's) fault, as I am terrible with computers, but we've decided to be nice and blame it on Blogger instead.

There were a few questions that none of us could come up with answers for, so unfortunately we left those off, and we also removed a few more for brevity's sake--as this post got very long very, very fast.  I think you'll feel you know us much better after having read this--at least we hope you do!  And please, feel free to leave us a comment with your own answers to these questions if you'd like--we would love to learn more about our lovely blog readers as well!
