I Kissed Him First + INTL Giveaway

Most of you will know by now that John Green took to the interwebs last week to declare that what makes The Fault In Our Stars such a truly special film is that Hazel initiates the first kiss. I think most people know just how untrue that statement is, but this isn't really about that.

I know Green was talking about movies, but this "girls kissing boys first" thing relates to books just as well. It's not really something I pay all that much attention to because I'm usually all OMG KISSING YAYAYAY MY SHIIIIIIIIIP but I thought it might be fun to list a few girls initiating sexy times books for the curious and also because it's nice to know those things.

Speaking of nice things, in the name of spreading awareness - and also because it's summer and most of these are summery books - I'm attaching an international giveaway. Two lucky winners will each get to pick one of the books listed below.

(In case you want more information on what the book in question is actually about, click on the cover and you'll be magically transported to the relevant Goodreads page.)

All the gratitude to Meg for that last example.

Note on My Life Next Door: While Jase is technically the one who kisses Sam, she tells him to do it, so I'm counting that as initiating. ALSO YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY.

Rules of the Claiming Game

1. To enter, fill out the Rafflecopter below.

2. Entrants need to be at least 13 years old and must have permission to share their address with me. I promise, I'm not going to use it for anything sketchy.

3. To be eligible for this giveaway, entrants must live in a country The Book Depository ships to. Once the book is dispatched, I'm no longer responsible for anything that might happen to it.

4. This giveaway runs for 2 weeks, after which I will contact the winners. They have 48 hours to respond. If I don't hear from them, I'll have to pick other people.

5. Please leave your email address in the Rafflecopter below, not in the comments.

6. No cheating. It isn't appreciated in romantic entanglements, and neither is it here.

Good luck!

  1. I love this list! I think it's brave for a girl to initiate a kiss first so it's nice to appraise them! I've read some of these titles already but I'm really looking forward to reading Open Road Summer and Boomerang! :)

    1. Great picks! I've read and liked both but Boomerang actually had me jumping up and down from feels. The great thing about Open Road Summer is that it features an amazing friendship as well. I normally don't pay much attention to who initiates because to me it's just as normal when the girl does it. In this case, though, I felt the need to point out that it's not such a novelty. Initiating can be a scary thing, but that's also true for guys.

    "Jase?"
    "Yeah?"
    "You need to kiss me."
    "Yeah, I do."

    1. Omg I originally had these two paragraphs that went into everything that was wrong with his statement but if I'd let those in, it might have contradicted the whole "but that's not what this is about" point. Basically it was that this just proves once again why I want JG to stay far away from making any "authoritative" statements on gender-related issues, and that I know he has apologised but that I'm getting really sick of this "blurt out some uninformed shit and then apologise later so it's all cool beans" routine he seems to be so fond of.

BEST MOMENT. ICONIC. I JUMPED UP AND STARTED DANCING WHEN IT HAPPENED. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

  21. Love the list! I've read a few of these books already and they were amazing! My Life Next Door is one of my favorite comtemporary romances ever!

  22. LOLA!! LOVE the list of all these contemporaries where the girls kiss the boys first. I think it's kinda normal in a way - why should boys get to initiate?

They're all such amazing authors and it's no wonder they've got go-getter girls who aren't afraid to kiss the boy they love :)

    Thank you :)

    ReplyDelete

    1. EXACTLY. I think it's completely normal, which is why I'm hesitant to call it a brave thing to do. Also, initiating is scary business and I think that goes for both parties just the same.

  23. I have read Scarlet! I love Wolf's-Scarlet's kissing scene and the love between them! I can't wait to read Boomerang! ;)

  25. Oh, John Green....I saw that backlash on Tumblr and, gosh. So misguided. I did see a post later by him apologising about being wrong, so I guess there's that.

I would definitely count My Life Next Door!
Side note: YES IT'S SUCH AN AMAZING BOOK. MORE PEOPLE SHOULD READ IT.

    1. Misguided is exactly the word for it. Yup, I know he apologised but he does that a lot. Say some stupid things and then apologise for them later but never seeming to learn to think before he says the next misguided thing.

      ISN'T IT THE BEST?

    1. Hahahaha. I love that Blythe dubbed it the "suck it, John Green" giveaway. Seriously though, girls who initiate aren't that rare. Not that it surprises me he'd think so but eh. Thank you! <3

  31. Wow, this list looks great! I'll have to add these to my Goodreads! Good luck to the lucky winners and thank you so much for the recommendations! :D I think it's definitely important for girls to learn that they can be sexy and sexual if they wanna be without being shamed for it so this is really great. Thanks again!

    1. Thank you! It's so important that they know it's okay to be sexual beings and that this doesn't have to impact their identity in a negative way. I absolutely hate it when they're being shamed for showing interest in sex.

  33. AUGH BLYTHE! Rafflecopter ate my free entry. :( I don't know if it went through, but if it did, I think it only got as far as my email address. (So my book pick would be The Falconer.)

Aaaaaanyways, what a great giveaway! I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to who chases whom, but these are some great choices.

  40. Hey, thanks for the giveaway.
I think John Green is quite unfairly taking credit for being the "first" to do a lot of things that others have done before, only his books are so mega-successful everyone believes him. I loved The Fault in Our Stars, but it certainly isn't the first good YA book ever written!
That said, I'd love to read most of these books, so making a choice will be tricky :)
